Get in Tune with Community Yoga at Farmer’s Park

As anyone who has dipped into downward dog or lost their balance while attempting tree pose knows, yoga asanas (the physical practice of yoga) require patience, discipline and the ability to tune out distraction. Which is why getting out of the studio and practicing yoga outdoors can be such a fun experience where you get to challenge yourself in the best way. Plus, nothing beats gazing up at the leaves of a tree while in savasana.

Luckily for you, The Yoga Mat on Center Street Promenade hosts a community yoga class every Sunday at 10:00 am at Farmer’s Park right across from Cultivation kitchen.

The class is donation-based and on a pay-what-you-can basis in which donations are encouraged, not required. Recently we checked out a Sunday class taught by The Yoga Mat instructor Lauren Lopez. “I’d say the benefit is generating that community is one of the main purposes of the studio—to bring people together. This is a healthy, fun activity to bring people outside into the community. Anybody can come in and practice and start,” Lauren says.

Proprietor and instructor Courtney Short enjoys introducing yoga to the community in novel and non-intimidating ways. A weekday noon lunchtime class is offered in-studio for a $10 drop-in rate. And in addition to the weekly outdoor community class, on the first Sunday of every month, The Yoga Mat hosts a “Bend and Brew” at Unsung Brewery where practitioners share a beer before or after a one-hour yoga class because why not get healthy and hoppy at the same time?
